Otorhinolaryngology

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology started as an Ear, Nose and Throat (E .N. T.) unit under the Department of Surgery in February 1957 with Professor F .D. Martinson as the first Consultant and Head of the Unit. It was initially sited at the Adeoyo Hospital, Ibadan and later became the first clinical unit to start working in the present University College Hospital while the Hospital was under construction. The Unit attained the status of a sub-department in 1963/64 session with the creation of a permanent post for a second lecturer

The Unit became a full independent department in the 1969/70 session and soon changed its official academic name from “E.N.T. Department” to the “Department of Otorhinolaryngology”, in conformity with the general international practice. This, in fact, made it to be the only such Department on the West African coast.

The Department is being reorganized in-line with the international practices and along the research focus of the current academic staff.  This has led to the emergency of: Otology, Skull base surgery unit, Otoneurology, Audiology unit, Rhinology Facioplastic Head & Neck Unit, Laryngology Head & Neck Unit.
