Oral & Maxillofacial

The department of oral and maxillofacial was established from the Department of Dentistry in 1981. Professor J.O Daramola was the first Head of Department. The main function of the Department at inception was the provision of dental services and the training of residents and undergraduate students. The Department combines maxillofacial surgical training and dental expertise for the management of tumors, injuries, diseases and deformities of the faceand jaws

The department is staffed by five consultants providing clinical services in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The department recently acquired maxillofacial reconstruction plate sand commenced the treatment of maxillofacial trauma patients and patients who underwent ablative surgery due to tumors using fixation and reconstruction plates. The Department is part of the UCH cleft management team which is currently being sponsored by the Smile Train graft. The Department is actively involved in research activities in the areas of maxillofacial traumatology, oncology, orofacial infections and HIV/AIDS. Through publications in peer reviewed journals the department has been able to contribute modestly to knowledge in these areas.

  1. Surgical Extraction; Removal of impacted and displaced Teeth
  2. Enucleating of Cystic Lesions; Soft and Hard Tissue Cysts are Removed
  3. Implantology; Missing Teeth are replaced with various forms of Implants
  4. Cleft Lip And Palate; Various Forms of defects of the Lip and Palate are corrected
  5. Temporomandibular Joint Disease; Disorders of Temporomandibular joint are corrected and stored
  6. Surgical Ablation Of Orofacial Tumors; Tumors are excised and reconstructed
  7. Maxillofacial Trauma And Infections; Various injuries and infections are treated
